Short Description

This course will cover biophysical techniques used in conjunction with chemical tools that allow distances to be measured within and between biological molecules.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Develop and enhance student understanding of biophysical techniques used to determine distances within and between molecules

■ Provide students with the opportunity to experience working with these techniques

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students should be able to:

■ Critically discuss how intra- and inter- molecular distances can be measured using FRET, pulsed EPR, and NMR.

■ Evaluate and justify a choice of chemical tool to use in FRET, pulsed EPR, and NMR.

■ Collect, analyse, and critically interpret their own data acquired using one or more of these techniques.

■ Communicate effectively their own data in a suitable scientific format.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
