Short Description

This course will deliver integrated knowledge in infection prevention in healthcare, with particular reference to dentistry. The course is aimed at those with dental degrees with the aim of enhancing their overall understanding and critical insights into the prevention of cross-infection in dentistry.

The lectures and seminars will run over a four week block in Semester 2.

Assessment

Five multiple short answer questions (50% - ILO 1,2,3,4) linked to the chain of infection and infection prevention scenarios.

Students will also submit a written assessment (2,000 words) related to contemporary issues in infection prevention and control, Local Decontamination Unit design plans, practice inspection audits, incident/outbreak reports or training tools aids (50% - ILO 1,2,3,4).

Course Aims

The aim of the course is to critique and integrate relevant basic and applied knowledge in microbiology that underpins the principles of current policies and processes for preventing spread of infection in clinical environments.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

On completion of the course, the student will:

1. Critically evaluate microbiology in the chain of infection in the context of the prevention of infection in healthcare.

2. Critically evaluate infection transmission in the chain of infection for healthcare.

3. Have critical insight of the International/National legislation, standards and guidance relevant to infection prevention in dental surgery.

4. Critically assess the decontamination cycle for dental instruments.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
