Short Description

The course provides a fundamental introductory training in Human Anatomy for students that will enrol in Medical School. The fundamental aim of the course is to develop an understanding of gross anatomy, medical and anatomical terminology, and the principles of identification of anatomical structures in medical images. The key themes of this course include: Back & Limbs, Head & Neck, Thorax, and Abdomen.

Timetable

The course runs for four weeks.

Each week normally consists of 3 morning sessions (Monday-Wednesday) comprising a 1-hour introductory lecture followed by 2 hours of laboratory study of anatomical pieces, images, and organ models (previously professionally dissected and plastinated).

In addition, there are 2-hour afternoon sessions normally onTuesdays and Thursdays, dedicated to dissection of one aspect of the human body.

On the last day of every week (Friday), a 1-hour revision session is followed by a spot test exam.

Requirements of Entry

GPA 3.0 or better. Transcripts must show a strong background in University-level Biology or successful completion (pass) of a University-level Anatomy course. IELTS 6 with no subject lower than 5.5 (or equivalent). Application from High School candidates must be referred to programme convener.

Assessment

The course will be assessed by a multiple-choice class test (50%), an oral presentation (10%) and four spot tests (4 x 10% = 40%).

Course Aims

The aims of the course are to:

■ Introduce and demonstrate the use of medical and anatomical terminology;

■ Introduce the principles of identification of anatomical structures in medical images;

■ Develop an understanding of gross anatomy;

■ Demonstrate clinical application of anatomical knowledge;

■ Aid the development of critical observation and dissection skills.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Describe structures using appropriate anatomical and medical terminology;

■ Identify structures on images;

■ Identify structures on professionally-dissected specimens or anatomical images;

■ Discuss applications of anatomical knowledge to clinical situations;

■ Demonstrate proficiency in critical observation and dissection skills.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
