Short Description

This course provides an introduction to the academic study of Psychology, focusing on the key skills and ideas essential to Level 1 courses in the Colleges of Social Sciences and MVLS.

2-hour seminar per week (Groups A and B Wednesday 11.00-13.00; Group C Thursday 13.00-15.00)

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Introduce students to the fundamental principles, concepts and issues in the major areas of contemporary scientific psychology.

■ Enable students to develop the academic literacies necessary for Level 1 undergraduate study in the Colleges of Social Sciences and MVLS.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Demonstrate an awareness of the character of the questions posed by psychology, and the scientific means by which psychology approaches answering these questions

■ Communicate key psychological theories and concepts from the major subfields of psychology in a logical and effective manner

■ Correctly use key terminology of this field of study

■ Undertake basic statistical analysis of data and interpret the results

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
