Short Description

This course explores the multi-cultural history of early Scotland by introducing the different peoples who inhabited Scotland from the Iron Age and early medieval periods (c. 800 BCE - c. 900 CE with a focus on the period from c. 100 - c. 900 CE). In this course students will learn through material and literary evidence about the Celtic peoples of early Scotland, the Picts, Britons, and Gaels. Students will also learn about the non-Celtic peoples who invaded and/or settled in Scotland, including the Romans, Angles, and Scandinavians.

Assessment

Report consisting of a comparative analysis of at least two ancient/early medieval cultures of Scotland (1000 words): 100%.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Introduce each culture of early Scotland individually and collectively

■ Consider the evidence for the impact of cultural exchange on the socio-cultural and political developments of early Scotland

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

Recognise and compare key early Celtic and non-Celtic cultures of Scotland

Locate the territories and expansion/decline of these cultures

Evaluate primary and secondary source material.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
