Short Description

In this course you will further develop basic communication skills in British Sign Language, learning to use a small range of signs to exchange information in some common everyday situations. You will develop your fingerspelling skills to understand and spell back, as well as becoming familiar with other elements of British Sign Language, such as placement, signing space and using facial expressions.

Assessment

Practical skills task (typically 4-5 minutes) evaluating students' competence in productive and receptive skills in the language, including appropriate use in context.

Course Aims

This course aims to: 

■ Introduce learners to basic, familiar everyday expressions and very simple phrases to satisfy specific needs;

■ Develop basic productive and receptive skills;

■ Introduce learners to a limited range of basic signs;

■ Familiarise learners with additional signing components.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to: 

■ Identify and produce very simple signed communication to ask and answer questions in areas of specific need and very familiar topics;

■ Recognise fingerspelling and spell back;

■ Begin to use signing space, placement and facial expressions.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit 100% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
