Short Description

This course will provide students with an introduction to the history of the transatlantic slave trade and colonial slavery in the Americas. Students will learn about the origins of slavery in the New World, the triangular trade routes, the middle passage, life on the plantation, and the importance of the slave trade and colonial slavery to Europe and America.

Course Aims

The course aims to:

■ Introduce students to the history of slavery in the Americas and the transatlantic slave trade using a comparative approach

■ Provide students with an opportunity to explore and critically analyse relevant primary and secondary sources

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Summarise the origins of plantation slavery in the Americas

■ Identify key terms

■ Compare the size and state of the slave populations of the various colonies

■ Recall the major historiographical arguments on the topics of slavery and the slave trade

■ Critically evaluate relevant historical sources of information

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
