Short Description

This course provides a practical approach to drawing and painting suitable for both beginners and students with some previous experience. It is designed to introduce you to drawing and painting skills and to teach you techniques using a variety of media such as acrylics, oils, gouache and watercolour. You will learn how to plan your paintings through preparatory studies, developments, experiments and research to produce finished works of art. Materials are not provided.

Assessment

Portfolio of work: 100%.

Students wishing to gain credits will be required to present a portfolio of their artwork, 2-6 individual pieces that demonstrate their skills in drawing and painting. These can include drawings, preparatory studies and finished works of art (oils, acrylics etc). Students should include in the portfolio a written personal reflection (c500 words) on the selection of their art submitted in the portfolio, explaining what they have learned from the course and how they have used their acquired skills in their art.

 

Course Aims

The aims of the course are to:

■ Introduce students to techniques and skills used in the process of drawing and painting.

■ Teach students how to plan a drawing or painting through preparatory studies, developments, experiments and research.

■ Enable students to use the skills and techniques they have learned to produce finished works of art in a variety of media.

■ Develop students' awareness, insight and perception of art.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to: 

Understand the basic techniques and skills of drawing and painting. 

Use the artist's working process to plan a painting through drawing, developments, experiments and research.

Demonstrate the techniques learned to produce finished drawings and paintings in a variety of media.

Appreciate and analyse a variety of work produced by professional artists to identify their specific use of the skills and techniques introduced on the course.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
