Research vision

I am an engineer and have had 10 years’ research experience working with ultrasound. I am currently works as research associate in the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering, Dept. of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Strathclyde. My research interest is advanced transduction technology, aiming to develop piezoelectric ultrasonic devices and system for industrial and biomedical applications such as:

  • Non-destructive testing/evaluation(NDT/E):  including high resolution/high sensitivity/broadband inspection and air-coupled NDT. My recent established interest is to deploy in-process inspection system for fusion welding where challenging environment presents such as high interference and high temperature.
  • Biomedical imaging and therapeutic ultrasound: imaging guided surgery, focused ultrasound surgery (FUS), targeted drug delivery.

Dr Qiu has extensive experience of designing, modelling and fabricating bespoke, application-oriented ultrasound transducers. She is also exploring new technologies like 3D-printing for both piezoelectric and capacitive transducers.

Expectations from collaboration

I am keen to apply my knowledge of piezoelectric ultrasound transducer development to new applications, where bespoke transducer is required to address the associated challenges.  Thus I am looking for cross-disciplinary collaborators who are seeking to use ultrasound as a tool for monitoring, imaging, manipulating or therapeutic treatment approaches for their applications.

Key Skills

  • Ultrasonic device design and fabrication;
  • Finite element modelling;
  • Piezoelectric material characterization;
  • Ultrasonic inspection;
  • Imaging post processing;
