Research Vision

This research involves the design, characterisation and validation of ultrasonically-power resonant bone biopsy needles. Bone biopsy needles have the potential to allow access deep within bone with no force and little thermal damage.

The surgical treatment of the petrous apex requires an extended surgical approach usually related to significant morbidity which can affect the patients’ hearing, balance or even the facial nerve function. Ultrasonic bone biopsy needle will allow pathologies of lesions and tumours through a minimally invasive ‘keyhole’ approach which will reduce morbidity and facilitate accurate diagnosis.

Expectations from collaboration

  • Expertise in the development and characterisation of medical devices
  • Insight into the progression from prototype development and commercial production.

Key Skills

  • Ultrasonic surgical needles,
  • medical device development,
  • finite element analysis,
  • experiment modal validation
