This project focuses on understanding the transmission of zoonotic bat viruses, those that can infect humans, within their natural hosts. They focused on rabies virus, carried by vampire bats in South and Central America, which often infect humans and livestock.

The researchers have identified how the rabies virus circulates in wild bats and inform how interventions can be applied. This involes field research with wild bats, and this project looks to explore not just the bats, but how we study bats safely and responsibly.

This project is led by Megan Griffiths from the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine.
