Nick Pearce, Richmond Chair of Fine Arts and Professor of History of Art, has become a Smithsonian Institution Research Associate.

Research Associates are senior experts in the field who have a formal scholarly relationship with the Smithsonian. As a Research Associate, Professor Pearce gains access to Smithsonian collections and facilities in exchange for his expertise and knowledge in Chinese art and provenance research.

Professor Pearce’s appointment continues his own and the University’s relationship with the Smithsonian. He has been a Visiting Professor to the Smithsonian and a Senior Research Fellow with the Smithsonian Provenance Research Initiative, creating a new provenance resource around its Chinese works of art through the Asian Art Provenance Connections Project.

In 2016 the University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Smithsonian. This formalised a long collaboration which has involved staff exchanges, student placements and summer schools, allowing access to historical collections on both sides of the Atlantic for world-class academics and researchers. Our Collecting and Provenance Masters programme has also developed out of this partnership. Students on this course have the opportunity to take on work placements at the Smithsonian.

Professor Pierce said: “I am delighted and honoured to be appointed a Smithsonian Research Associate and look forward to continuing my work with colleagues whom I respect enormously. I am proud of the University’s many and growing links with this great institution.”
